FREEFORMING THE RIGHT WAY😱
FREEDOM OR FREEFORM LOCS
This type of locs is grown naturally by leaving your hair to mat by itself by doing nothing to manipulate it e.g combing, retwisting of any form. Your hair decides for itself in what form it's gonna grow, therefore your hair can grow out in different shapes and sizes thereby giving rise to non- uniform locs.
Freeforming: This is the process of growing freeform locs. It is a form of loc maintenance that eliminates the use of products such as gel/ wax or practices such as palmrolling/ interlocking to help your loc form.
As it does not involve any form of manipulation, it is regarded as low maintenance requiring only shampooing and moisturizing.
Freedom locs can be achieved in three ways:
1⃣ By birth: Some people are called to freeform locs by birth as seen in the Western people of Nigeria, the Yorubas, where a child is born with already tangled(free formed) hair from birth which grows and mature afterwards into free formed locs of varying sizes.
2⃣ Natural choice: You can begin your journey to free formed locs by simply leaving your hair in its natural state for black curly hair. You stop any form of manipulation on your hair such as combing it to allow your curl pattern to tangle into one another and form locs. This process usually takes time and requires patience to evidently see your hair take a loc shape.
3⃣ Transitioned locs: This method can be adopted by two sets of people:
❤Those who want to grow uniformed sized freeform locs.
❤Those already on traditional locs journey wanting to transition to freeform locs.
Because freeform locs tend to form in different loc sizes, one loc being in disproportionate size with the other, some people choose to part/line their natural hair into uniform parts and allow their locs to form from the predetermined loc size.
For others already on an existing loc journey,it is easier to transition to freeform locs by stopping previous forms of maintenance such as palmrolling/ interlocking/ crocheting/ styling done on their locs and simply let your locs do whatever it wants.
FREEFORMING RULES:
In as much as freeforming is low maintenance, it does not necessarily translate to neglecting your hair in contrast to popular beliefs.
It does mean doing away with some certain practices and adopting newer ones such as those enlisted below:
💬Don't manipulate your hair in the form of brushing or combing.
💬Ditch the regular conditioners, they do the opposite of what you want to achieve- tangled hair.
💬The use of products on locs such as gel, wax is prohibited.
💬No retwisting/interlocking of locs.
💬Sleep with a satin/silk pillowcase or bonnet/ durag.
💬Shampoo your locs once a month or as indicated with residue free shampoo.
💬Moisturize your locs with water and seal in moisture with natural light oils.
These rules are easy to adopt and live by to ensure a healthy freeform journey.
WHAT TO EXPECT ON YOUR FREEFORM JOURNEY:
1⃣ Longer time to loc: Because you're starting off with your hair in its loose natural state, it takes a longer time for the loose hair to fully loc to a condensed loc mass. This usually takes about 6-12 months to have the solidified loc feel depending on loc texture.
2⃣ Gravity defying locs: This term is used to describe a situation where your locs stand as opposed to lying flat. It is a common feature seen especially with kinkier curl pattern and freedom locs started on short to medium natural hair length.
3⃣ Congos formation: This is a single thick loc compared to the other loc sizes that is formed as a result of adjacent locs meshing into a single loc forming into a single loc root with sometimes multiple loc tips at the end of the loc.
4⃣ Flat locs: Freedom locs are more likely to have flat locs due to the absence of practices such as palmrolling to keep the locs in a cylindrical shape.
5⃣ Fuzzy locs: As manipulative practices on freedom locs are prohibited, freeform locs tends to be frizzy or fuzzy for a longer time frame than maintained locs.
