HOW TO DEAL WITH FRIZZY LOCS

I'm sure most of us are familiar with the phrase, "Frizz is a part of the process, embrace it". I have had to wonder earlier on in my journey how much I had to endure for being loc,'d before I could truly be satisfied with my locs.

Come to think of it, being loc'd throws you a lot of lemons to make a lemonade from. It isn't a journey for the weak hearted. You go from dealing with deciding your starter locs method to dealing with shrinkage to unraveling to budding and then our subject matter frizz.

For me, I had reached a point of no return with my locs and just had to go with the " flow" as it comes. I sure tried a lot of quick fixes until I got complacent and simply let my hair alone. So sticking it out with your locs is one way to deal with frizz i.e just letting your hair do its thing but that probably isn't the answer you're searching for especially when you got your starterlocs looking unruly.

This takes me to the next easy diy option which is Loc wrapping. On slightly damp and oiled hair, you're going to pick out the stray hairs sticking out of your locs starting from the root and you're going to wrap it along the length of your locs while going downwards still stringing along other loose hairs until you get to the end of your locs. Repeat on another loc. There you have it.

The next trick is quite technical requiring the use of a crochet hook of sizes 0.5, 0.6, 0.75mm; whichever is available and similar to what we did above, you begin poking the hook into your locs with the aim of incorporating the stray hairs into your locs, repeating this as you go downwards through the locs. There are several techniques to this but you just want to manoeuvre the hook as stated earlier to get the loose hairs into the locs. With practice, you'll get a hand of it.

Loc brushing is another quick fix I have discovered. So you simply select a suitable loc brush with soft bristles and brush through the length of your locs. It gives your locs a neat appearance by laying down the frizz. Thus tip should come in handy.
Still moving on, keep your hands off your hair. It ensures less frizz. I know its tempting not to constantly touch your hair or manipulate it but to reduce the aforementioned, you can keep a loc hairstyle to avoid constant manipulation.

My last but not the least tip is to protect your locs both day and night. To protect your locs at night, ensure you keep a satin/silky hair bonnet/durag snug enough to fit your locs or you could substitute by getting a satin/silk pillowcase or better still, you have both. Cotton materials cause frizz by drying out moisture from locs and create friction with locs.

Did you know that long exposure of your locs to sun takes out moisture from locs, therefore drying out your locs and causing frizz? There is therefore the need to protect your locs in the day, the most obvious option being to wear a sunhat when out in the sun but that would be hiding your locs right?! So, a better alternative is to always moisturize your locs and seal in the moisture with light natural carrier oils such as olive oil, coconut oil to protect your locs from the harsh effects of the sun as it acts as SPF.

Let me quickly add also that trimming off loose hairs with scissors to get rid of frizz is a big NO. You will only regret the action later on in your loc journey as you weaken your locs strands and will only result to thinned locs.

To summarize the article above on dealing with frizz:
1. Wait it out, frizz gets less noticeable with time as your locs mature.
2. Practice loc wrapping.
3. Use a crochet hook to take in the stray hairs.
4. Loc brushing will help.
5. Practice low manipulation. Leave your hands off your hair.
6. Protect your locs both night and day.
7. Never trim off loose hairs.
