HOW TO START DREADLOCKS

There are different ways to start locs each of which depends on your preference and lifestyle to suit your needs. They include;
💚Coils
💚Twists
💚Braids
💚Interlock
💚Instant locs
💚Loc extensions


 1⃣ COILS


Coils are made with the aid of a fine tooth comb(comb coils) or merely by spiralling your hair over your index finger(finger coils) to form hollow coils.

What to expect;
👉The coils tends to swell over time as it absorbs water.

Pros
👉Can be started on really short hair
👉Easy to do
👉Takes the shape of a loc.

Cons
👉Requires gel/wax for more hold
👉Unravels easily
👉Buds easily along the length of the locs

 2⃣ BRAIDS

Formed by plaiting three strands of hair together.

Pros
👉No gel/wax is required
👉No fear of unravelling

Cons
👉The braid patterns rarely goes away but can be hidden by frizz but can still be seen on closer look.
👉It gives a more compact hold so it makes your hair less full than you would expect
👉Gives a scantier or thinner look because of its compact nature
👉Owing to the above,swelling is also null or minimum.
               

3⃣ TWISTS

It is formed by twisting two strands (or three strands) of hair over each other.

What to expect;
👉Swells over time
👉Shrinks in length

Pros
👉No product is required to start
👉Does not unravel as much as coils during wash days
👉Can be used to start locs on those who hair tends to unravel or slip easily.

Cons
👉The twist pattern tends to be visible for up to 6 months before it disappears within frizzy hair

 4⃣ INTERLOCKS

Created with an interlocking tool.

What to expect
👉It forms into a braid like shape

Pros
👉Does not ever unravel
👉Starter form for those who want sisterlocs or microlocs
👉Less maintenance

Cons
👉If done too often and incorrectly can lead to thin locs.
                     

5⃣ INSTANT LOCS
Formed with the aid of a crochet hook(0.6mm) to give it an instant dreaded look as the name implies.

What to expect;
You skip the budding phase of locs

Pros
👉Gives an instant dread look in shorter time

Cons
👉You skip the loc process
👉You end up with a length 2-4" shorter than your actual length

 6⃣ LOCS EXTENSIONS

Made with pre-formed locs formed from natural afro hair(Marley hair) and intertwined with one's real hair with the aid of the crochet hook

Pros
👉Can be started in very short locs
👉Great for those who wanna add length
👉Forms matured locs

Cons
👉People who choose to start this way may be criticized for not having authentic or genuine locs.
                     

 7⃣ FREEFORM

In this category,nothing whatsoever is done to your hair to aid it to begin locking. You let your hair do its thing neither do you comb it nor part it. Simply let it be.

Pros
👉Easy to start
👉Does not require products
👉Less maintenance

Cons
👉Irregular loc size owing to the fact there is no parting system.
👉It can look unruly because nothing is done to the new growth
👉Can form matted locs easily.
